The Lodge is a renovated Historical Church (circa 1923) that was originally moved from a mining community. It has been completely refurbished inside with natural NZ timbers that are now protected from felling... Kauri, Rimu etc. Much of the traditional decor has been restored, such as the stained glass windows. An upstairs loft has been added and the Church can now sleep 7+ people quite comfortably.
High cathedral ceilings and rich natural timbers make this Lodge a wonderful retreat for those who wish to explore and experience a wide range of West Coast outdoor activities. The Lodge is especially alluring to anglers hunting that trophy fish. Lake Poerua and surrounding rivers, spring creeks and lakes are abundant with brown trout.
Hidden away in a ponga grotto (NZ native fern) by a trickling mountain stream, a bubbling hot spa is guaranteed to ease those city tensions at night by candlelight. Fresh-water crayfish can sometimes be spotted by the entrance to the Grotto. Can be reached by a beautiful drive through mountain and forest scenery, 2.5 hours from Christchurch or alternatively catch the world famous Transalpine Train, listed as one of the top 8 train journeys in the world. Pick up can be arranged from nearby stations.
There are many activities to get involved in closeby from hunting to gold panning, waterskiing to hiking.
