Originally an Opal Mine from the 1960s, it was converted in the mid-1980's to 10 motel rooms, 12 budget rooms and 12 dormitories.
8 of the motel rooms are 3.5m under a standstone ridge and you enter at ground level. 2 motel rooms are above ground with windows. The budget rooms and dorms are 6.5m underground down 34 steps.
60% of people who live in Coober Pedy live underground to avoid the heat of the summer. If it is 45 degrees outside, underground it is 26-28 degrees. Winter nights can be close to zero, but underground is is 20-22 degrees.
