Ice Hotel

Jukkasjärvi, Norrbottens Lan, Sweden

The world's largest scupltured ice hotel offers great excursions into the Swedish Lapland.

Description

From its beginnings as an igloo of 50 square metres the Ice Hotel in the Swedish Laplands has become the world's largest hotel of ice and snow at about 5500 square metres.

Ice Hotel starts to receive guests in December while the hotel is still taking shape. It is completed by the end of the year which is the darkest time of the year. The sun never reaches the horizon. But the snow glistens and crunches under foot and the chances of seeing the Northern Lights dance across the sky are very favourable.

The hotel remains open until April when the midnight sun starts to nibble at the walls and roof of the hotel.

During your stay you can visit the Ice factory and even try sculpting ice. Excursions include dog sledding, moose and reindeer treks on snowmobile, or the chance to experience the Sami culture.

Temperatures are never cooler than -5 °C to -8 °C, regardless of how cold it may be outside. There are Arte Suites where you stay amongst ice art of fantastic design and wonderful sculptures. You sleep in a thermal sleeping bag on a special bed of snow and ice, on reindeer skins. Or choose an Ice Room with furniture made from ice, or a spacious Snow Room.

Breakfast buffet, morning sauna (hot tub) and towels are included in your stay. Ice rooms start around €200 for 2 per night. Staying in cold and warm accommodation works well as a package. Weddings can be arranged.

There is summer accommodation (warm rooms) and activities available in the area including white water rafting, and ice scuplting.
