Most of us who love the outdoors have a common passion – to soak in cool clear natural waterways, to totally immerse ourselves in the sights and sounds of nature. At Back of Beyond you will discover the bubbling Dehigaha Ela tumbling its cold clear water into the warm slow moving Kiri Oya in what looked like a corridor of rain forest in the middle of the dry zone.

A network of red earth roads takes you deep into isolation as chena cultivation blends with high grass and thick forests. There is an abandoned paddy field that had become a delicate green of illuk grass; a circular clearing at the base of a hill, ringed by the thick forest on the sweeping curve of the two streams. A small secret place for all forms of wildlife – elephants, sambhur, birds, butterflies - to visit.

There are 2 cottages (sleeping 2/3 guests) built around boulders and 3 tree houses (sleeping 3/5/5 guests), all carefully placed to blend with the environment and wildlife. If coming with children then a low level long house is better suited for you and offers a great space for up to 6 guests with its own boulder garden and lawn. All properties have access to toilets and a shower.

Solar energy is used to meet all the electricity needs at the retreat. Low lighting is used throughout to minimize night time disturbance to the environment as well as to conserve energy.

The living and dining huts are set on the far side of the small lake and open space. The cook prepares a wide variety of Sri Lankan and western dishes. A picnic can be prepared for a day of exploring. Wade in the stream, hike, bike on the local red earth roads, or go bird watching. Although you are not far from National Parks to see wildlife, Sigiriya rock fortress and Dambulla buddhist caves, there is plenty to enjoy right here.
