Red Kite Cabin, Shepherd's Hut

Enjoy a short break in the heart of the Nene Valley, Northamptonshire. Situated on a smallholding near the small market town of Oundle, near to the River Nene, find a lovely Shepherd's Hut, Red Kite Cabin is perfect for two people and has its own river view. There is easy access to the river if you would like to bring your own canoe/kayak and explore the River Nene.

Red Kite Cabin has one double bed, with fresh bed linen and towels provided. It is fully double glazed, with solar-powered electric lighting. There is a wood burning stove to keep you warm on colder nights, comfy wicker chairs and a small library of books - should reading be your thing! Outside, you have your own firepit with BBQ grill and table/bench. You can take part in some star gazing on a clear night, toasting marshmallows around the campfire. At the right time of year, you can watch bats flitting about at dusk. Red Kites frequently soar above the field and there is a family of green woodpeckers who live in the trees nearby. You have access to your own private, centrally heated bathroom and kitchen facilities in the Boatman's Cabin next door to the Hut.

If you are staying for a couple of days there is plenty to explore. The hut is about a mile from the market town of Oundle with its beautiful honey-coloured stone buildings and where you will find many lovely shops, pubs and restaurants. Further afield, you could visit the Bronze Age village at Flag Fen, visit Lyveden New Bield, an Elizabethan Lodge and moated garden or take a trip to Fotheringhay to see the remains of the castle, the birthplace of Richard III and execution site of Mary, Queen of Scots. There is a fine cathedral at Peterborough which is the burial place of Katherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII. There are plenty of country parks and wildlife reserves in the area too, and places such as Stanwick Lakes, Rushden Lakes, Barnwell Country Park and Ferry Meadows for walking, cycling and other outdoor activities.
