Eco-Tourism Information:

The current owners have done a huge amount of work on the land at Pengelly Retreat to make it more in keeping with the native Cornwall habitat and support the wildlife diversity here. They've planted over 500 native species trees including rowan, hawthorn and birch, with plans to plant more! And planted the land to provide a diversity of habitats to sustain the wildlife, including wildflowers, meadows to encourage the bees, butterflies and dragonflies.

The water which flows between the lakes and ponds here has been re-designed to be gravity fed, removing the need for electric pumpts. The lakeside yurt and cabin are also built to be low impact on the environment by using natural materials where possible, such as wood and canvas. In keeping with this focus on the environment, guests are encouraged to recycle as much as possible, with use of a dedicated recycling area from which all refuse is collected by a private waste disposal contractor who separates out all items possible to recycle.

Guests can also help by buying local from one of the nearby farm shops or ordering food boxes from a local supplier - the owners provide detailed information for all their guests with information on local attractions and places to visit, where to shop local as well as a discount code for Cornish Food Boxes.

FAQs

Anything special I need to bring?

Wellies if it has been raining and flip flops for pottering around on the deck. A head torch is also handy if coming back late to the yurt. Insect repellent can also be useful.

Can I fish in the lake?

Yes you are very welcome to have a go at fishing in the lake, catch and release policy only and using barbless hooks. We don’t supply fishing gear so you’d need to bring your own with you.

Can I swim in the lake?

Yes you can but please be aware that wild swimming is at your own risk. You need to be a confident swimmer as the lake’s banks shelve off steeply. There are reeds in the water so steer clear of these are swim in the areas that are obviously reed-free. There are stream areas which are ideal for paddling in.

Does the property have electricity?

Yes it has electricity and plug points. Also hot water for a shower.

Do you have Wi-Fi and will I get mobile phone signal?

Yes we have a Wi-Fi booster which means that there is wifi available across much of the land, however mobile phone signal is weak.
