Description

Built and designed by a local master craftsmen, this eco, off grid, romantic, quintessentially quirky dwelling the Phoenix Tree offers a fabulous stay for 2 adults close to the Black Mountains, near Abergavenny.

The Phoenix Tree is an extraordinary treehouse built in and around a resurrected oak tree and is a great place to take in the stunning views of the local landscape and to digitally detox and just be. The bedroom, as with all true treehouses, is up in the boughs with a wonderful lookout view (and has a top quality mattress and luxurious bamboo bed linen). Please note that access is via a very steep staircase with handrails, so not suitable for large pieces of luggage. This is constructed with ingenuity from reclaimed caterpillar tracks, conveyor belt steps and gas pipe rails. Upstairs you can enjoy gazing at the everchanging sky through the skylight in the roof and surrounding reclaimed windows.

The lower level is protected by curved straw and cob walls, and has bamboo roof struts which make a beautiful ceiling. Light a fire in the cob hearth to keep the treehouse cosy, and settle into the sofa as a perfect place to chill out with your favourite book. There is a simple kitchen and you are given 'the bare necessities of life" from a hand operated coffee grinder, a corkscrew, heavy duty pots and pans that can go on the fire, to colourful enamelware to eat from. Cooking can be done in the hearth, on a gas hob, or BBQ. There is an eco composting loo behind a bamboo wall.

Outside is your own private wooden hot tub and funky shower in the dingle, plus a BBQ area with viewing platform, the perfect place for enjoying your morning cuppa or late night tipple. Hot water for the hot tub, shower and washing up only comes from lighting a fire in the wood burner outside, and this takes at least 2 hrs.

Locally you can enjoy hiking in the stunning Brecon Beacons or alternatively if you looking for some adrenaline raising activities, try your hand at mountain biking at the Black Mountain Cycle Centre just down the road, or supertubing in nearby Ebbw Vale. Those interested in history can enjoy a day out at the cathedral city of Herefordt before heading over to a number of castles to explore in the area. There are an extraordinary number of great places to eat, from the famous Walnut Tree and The Hardwick, to the owners local and most favoured pub the Carpenters Arms, which is within walking distance.

No children. Up to 2 dogs welcome at an extra cost of £20 each per stay, but must stay on a lead at all times due to grazing livestock.

Monday arrivals for a 4 night stay and Friday arrivals for a 3 night stay.
