Description
Retreat to the countryside in the comfort of this historic listed cottage. On the slopes of the Pennines, it is entirely hidden in a the deep secluded valley of Merrydale, site of the first water-powered mill in the Colne Valley. As it accommodates up to 6 guests, it is perfect for family get-togethers or maybe just for friends to share.
This spacious two storied cottage was created by combining a former barn and a labourer's cottage. It is full of original artwork and antique furniture and has a neutral carbon footprint, thanks to its solar panels, wood pellet heating and massive insulation. On the ground floor there is an unusually large kitchen diner that includes comfortable seating. This is a great place for the family to gather to enjoy a board game or two while someone prepares the next meal. The traditional York stone floor is underfloor heated as is the lovely spacious hallway where an additional dining table with Isle of Mull chess set can be enjoyed. Accessed from the hall are a twin bedroom and a shower/toilet.
The spiral staircase in the hall leads to the elegant first floor living room with 2 comfy sofas, a wood pellet stove and TV. This room is open to the rafters, exposing its impressively large Queen roof truss. Dominant features in this room are an antique Cape Dutch yellow-wood armoire, a Chilean wood carving and a large gilt mirror. The master bedroom, with its impressive Georgian mahogany, hand-carved four poster bed, adjoins the living room. Windows on two of its walls have lovely views of surrounding woods and gardens. It has its own ensuite bathroom. Also accessed from the living room are a second twin room (with ensuite bathroom) and the balcony that overlooks the private barbecue area.
In addition to its own private space, the cottage has direct access to a large, award winning shared garden. Most of the guests rave about it and, particularly when the weather is fine, spend a lot of time in it. It contains several distinct and separate areas, different styles of planting, sculptures, swing seats, the mill pond for the first water-powered mill in the Colne Valley, large lawns, a bog garden and further afield, a wild picnic area next to the river, waterfall and packhorse bridge. It is particularly enjoyed children and dogs!
Locally you can enjoy many beautiful walks as well as hikes on the moors and along the Pennine Way. The Rose and Crown pub is a short but very steep woodland walk away and serves large hearty meals. Those with an interest in history would enjoy a visit to Shibden Hall, which has recently been featured in the BBC drama 'Gentleman Jack'. Shibden Park has a cafe, children's play area, a boating lake and miniture railway, so offers fun for all the family. The children's museum, Eureka, is also in nearby Halifax.
There is a minimum 2 night stay during term times with a 3 night minimum for weekends during school holidays.
